Children are a social group disproportionately affected by socioeconomic inequalities, environmental problems, violence, and illness (Madeira, 2015; Sarmento, 2004). Furthermore, social perspectives on childhood have contributed to building a system that makes children more vulnerable, removing their autonomy and preventing them from accessing the right to participation enshrined in the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Considering communities as privileged places for intervention, since the community process is multidimensional and multidirectional (Ornelas, 1997), this research sought to explore the relationship between community and children's participation since their involvement is essential for dismantling these power structures, bringing benefits to society (Cortesão & Jesus, 2022; Madeira, 2015; Sarmento, 2004; Taylor & Percy-Smith, 2008).
Through a case study in a Community Centre, we sought to understand a community reality, understanding how communities shape childhoods and, at the same time, what the potential of children is in transforming communities, defending the idea that the involvement and participation of children and young people is the key to a better future.
